Last Friday, Aunt Liu announced that she will be retiring at the end of this year due to the discomfort caused by her shoulder periarthritis.

She shared her story with me: 29 years ago, at just 17, she left her hometown in Sichuan Province and took a train that took more than a day to reach Cixi City. Coming from a family with three children—herself, a daughter, and two younger sons—she had no choice but to leave the mountains in search of work, as there were no opportunities in her remote village.

Aunt Liu found her first job at a small shoe factory, earning 1200 CNY (about $170 USD). She sent more than two-thirds of her salary home to support her family, keeping only the bare minimum for herself.

Fortunately, she later married and had a son, who is now a freshman at Chengdu University of Electronic Science and Technology—one of the top universities in China. However, after years of hard work, her body has started to weaken. Her story moved me. Life is a long journey.We cannot control ourselves all the time.
